The table lies: who is undervalued in Ligue 1
Lens are eleventh and second. Marseille tenth and third. Three matchdays are enough to open gaps the points column does not show.

A table adds up points. It does not say who they were taken from, nor whether a scrappy 1-0 is worth as much as a controlled 3-0. After three matchdays that difference is enormous — and it produces spectacular gaps between what a side is worth and the place it occupies.
Lens, the league's second strongest side
In the table,
Lens are 11th in the table on 4 points. On estimated strengths, the club is
second in the league, behind PSG alone. Their attack is worth 1.26 and their defence 0.92: a side that scores more
than average and concedes less.
Nine places between strength and standing. It is the second largest gap in the league, after PSG's.
Marseille, the same story
Sitting 10th on 3 points, Olympique de Marseille are third on strength. Their attack — 1.40 — is the league's second best. Their defence, 1.04, is barely better than average, and it is what keeps them from climbing higher.
And those whose position is deserved
Not every club shows that discrepancy. Lille are 4th in the table and fourth on strength: the gap is nil. Their 10 points match exactly what their level would lead you to expect.
That is the most common case after only a few matchdays for mid-table sides, whose results have not had time to drift from their average.
Why it matters
A nine-place gap is not an opinion about what will happen, but it changes how you read what has happened. A side sitting eleventh with the league's second best level has not played badly: it has converted badly. And converting better requires no improvement at all — only that variance stops working against it.
The reverse exists too. A well-placed side with an average level generally comes back down, without anything having deteriorated. That is what the power ranking lets you see a month before the table does.
