Barça – Real: a clear favourite, and a Clasico that could reopen La Liga
A six-point lead, Spain’s best attack against its best defence, and Vinícius suspended. Our two models pick the same favourite, a few points apart. What Sunday’s result changes in the title race, scenario by scenario.

FC Barcelona have 27 points from 9 matches,
Real Madrid 21. A six-point gap before they meet on Sunday night, and a Real side arriving without Vinícius, suspended after a red card.
On the favourite, for once, our two models agree. On what this match changes to the season, you have to look beyond the result: a Clasico is not worth three points like any other.
The same favourite, a few points apart
Dixon-Coles, our results model, calculated this morning, gives Barcelona 55.1%, Real Madrid 23.5% and the draw 21.4%.
Our player model, which judges the eleven expected on the pitch rather than past results, reaches the same order: 51.6% for Barcelona, 27.1% for Real Madrid, 21.4% for the draw. Both see the same most likely score: 2-1.

| 23.5% |
| 51.6% | |
| 27.1% |
The player model leaves a little more room for Real Madrid. That fits what it looks at: it knows nothing of the six-point lead, only the players on the pitch, and Real’s remain among the best in Europe.
The best attack against the best defence
This is the fixture the numbers make rare. Barcelona’s attack index is 2.16: the highest in La Liga, more than double the average. Real Madrid’s defence index is 0.74: the best in the league, where lower means fewer goals conceded.

At the Camp Nou, attack wins out in the calculation: Dixon-Coles expects 2.14 goals from Barcelona and 1.36 from Real Madrid. The match should be open.
That last figure deserves a pause: the most likely score does not happen even once in ten. The 1-1, just behind, carries 9.1%. A Clasico is played on a very wide spread of scores, not on a forecast.
What the result changes in the title race
We replayed the rest of the season 50,000 times, imposing each Clasico result and letting the model play out the remaining fixtures. With no condition, Barcelona are champions in 88.1% of those seasons, Real Madrid in 8.8%.
A Barcelona win would come close to settling it in October: Real Madrid would fall to 5.2%. A Real Madrid win, on the other hand, would almost double their chances, from 8.8% to 16.8%. Barcelona would stay clear favourites, but La Liga would become a race again.
The absentees: Vinícius, and a depleted Barcelona defence
Vinícius is suspended until 27 October after a red card. He is not in the typical line-up our player model uses for Real Madrid, so their 27.1% is already calculated without him. Real’s main threat remains Mbappé. On this specific match, his absence would cost Real Madrid 2.8 points of winning probability, with Endrick taking his place.
For Barcelona, Dani Olmo (adductor) and Eric García (hamstring) are injured, as is Christensen, and Koundé, with an ankle problem, has his absence due to end on the day of the match itself.
Eric García is the only one of these absentees in Barcelona’s typical line-up. Without him, on this fixture, Barcelona’s winning probability drops from 51.6% to 48.6%, and Real Madrid’s rises to 29.6%.
That figure is optimistic for Barcelona: the replacement the model picks is Christensen, who is injured himself. The real stand-in will be a third choice, and the true cost a little higher.
What would prove the models wrong
Dixon-Coles knows nothing about line-ups: it sees a Barcelona side that scores a lot in La Liga, whether its defence is complete or not. The player model, for its part, relies on projected line-ups, not the official team sheet released an hour before kick-off. Koundé’s return, or an unexpected tactical choice in an already thin defence, would be enough to move its numbers.
Calculations of 24 October 2026: a clear favourite for both models, and a title that, after a Real Madrid win, would become a genuine race again. The Camp Nou will tell whether Real Madrid still have a say.
Frequently asked questions
Who is favourite for the Barcelona – Real Madrid Clasico?
Barcelona, for both of our models. Dixon-Coles, calculated on 24 October 2026, gives them a 55.1% chance of winning, against 23.5% for Real Madrid and 21.4% for the draw. The player model, calculated the same day on typical line-ups, gives Barcelona 51.6%, Real Madrid 27.1% and the draw 21.4%.
What is the most likely score of Barcelona – Real Madrid?
2-1 for both models. In Dixon-Coles it carries 9.4%: more than nine times out of ten, the final score will be something else. It is the most likely score, not a prediction.
Can Real Madrid still win La Liga if they beat Barcelona?
A Real Madrid win in Barcelona would almost double their title chances: from 8.8% to 16.8% in our scenarios, recalculated on 24 October 2026 over 50,000 seasons. Barcelona would remain favourites, at 79.4%.
