In Portugal, three clubs and one point between them
Sporting, Porto, Benfica: the tightest of the six leagues we cover. Two of them are within two percentage points of each other.

In five of our six leagues, one favourite pulls clearly clear. Not in Portugal. Sporting are made champions in 35% of simulated seasons, FC Porto in 34%. In statistical terms, the gap between the two means nothing.

Three profiles, three ways to win
What makes this race interesting is that the three contenders are not shaped alike.
Sporting attack. Their index of 2.12 is the highest in the league, and their defence — 0.72 — stays good without being the best.
Porto defend. At 0.56, they have the best defence across the six leagues we follow, all teams included. Their attack, at 1.72, sits slightly behind their two rivals'.
Benfica combine. An attack of 1.96 and a defence of 0.65 — the best balance of the three — but a weaker current standing, in 4th place.
What it means for the season
When three sides are this close, the season is not decided by head-to-head meetings — there are only four — but by the matches against the rest of the league. Whichever of the three drops fewest points against mid-table opposition will take the advantage, and those are precisely the fixtures where variance decides.
The model puts Sporting on 76.8 points and Porto on 77.1. A few points apart over a whole season: nothing is settled, and these figures will move on every matchday.

The figures in this piece are read from the latest published computation: they update with the model and may therefore differ from those of the publication date. That is deliberate — an article should not go on asserting what is no longer true.
