Operational reality

Account limits, liquidity, odds movements: what the maths doesn't tell you.

7 min read

You've mastered the theory. But between a model that wins on paper and a winning result in reality, there's a lot of friction.

"Sharp" and "soft" bookmakers

  • Sharp (for example Pinnacle, some Asian bookmakers, exchanges): low margins, accept winners, very efficient odds. They serve as the reference for estimating the true probability.
  • Soft (most mainstream bookmakers): higher margins, odds sometimes lagging behind the market. That's where most value bets are found… but they don't like winners.

Account limiting

Soft bookmakers detect bettors who consistently beat the closing line, and limit their stakes (sometimes to a few euros), or even close their account. This is the main constraint of value betting.

Practices often mentioned to delay limiting:

  • Avoid playing only obvious value bets in the seconds after an odds movement.
  • Round your stakes (€10, not €13.47).
  • Vary your markets and don't play niche markets exclusively.

Liquidity and stake limits

Odds are only worth something if you can get your stake on at them. In minor leagues and exotic markets, limits are low. A +10% EV strategy limited to €20 per bet earns little in absolute terms.

Odds movements

Value bets disappear quickly: when a bookmaker lags behind the market, it often corrects its odds within seconds or minutes. Reactivity is a key factor. Also expect some of your bets to be rejected or accepted at lower odds.

Voids for palpable error

If odds are obviously wrong ("palpable error"), the terms and conditions often allow the bookmaker to void the bet. An EV of +40% is often a sign of an error, and the bet has a good chance of being voided.

Exchanges and commission

On an exchange, there's no built-in margin, but a commission on net winnings (often 2 to 5%). Your effective odds are:

effective odds=1+(odds−1)(1−commission)\text{effective odds} = 1 + (\text{odds} - 1)(1 - \text{commission})

Tax

The tax treatment of betting winnings varies widely between countries and situations. Seek advice from a professional or your country's tax authority.

The bottom line

Profitable value betting is an activity that's demanding in time, discipline and tooling. The maths is the necessary condition; execution is what makes the difference.
